The Addictive Game of Golf and the Driver

To learn golf is to love golf.

And when you learn golf, the first thing most people do is invest in equipment.
To learn a little about golf clubs, there are three categories:  woods, irons, and putters.  Woods are used to hit longer distances across the fairway, irons are for both short and long-distance, and putters are only for rolling the ball into the cup on the green.  We’ve all seen Tiger Wood amaze us using a putter and an ironand woods, actually.

Of the woods, GCD are the superstars of the golf bag.  They are meant to hit the longest distances and are most often used from the tee box.  According to PGA players like Bobby Lopez, the initial golf shot is of the utmost importance, and most of the time, the initial shot is made with a driver.  Unfortunately, using drivers is the part that the majority of people have trouble with, and usually begin each hole with a bad shot!

The pros’ advice is to put the driver down and revert to your 3-wood but most people will revert back to using their drivers at the next tee box.

The main thing to understand about GCD is that the biggest problem is most likely the length of the shaft.  In theory, the longer the length of the driver, the longer you can swing the ball because the head will travel faster prior to making contact with the ball.  But theory is not reality, and with the added length, the harder it is to make direct contact with the ball, causing most players to start each hole with a ball that’s headed in a bad direction.  Many golf companies are making golf club drivers that are 45-46 inches in length, but when you’re considering this, keep in mind that Tiger Woods uses a 43.5 inch length.  If he can do what he does with that length, trust me; you do not need  the extra-long lengths.  Hitting the ball as straight as possible is what’s important; losing direction to gain length is irrelevant if you’re headed off into the wrong direction.

Also – the head size on the golf drivers are very important.  Again, bigger is not better.  Bobby Lopez and many other pros recommend heads no larger than 395cc.  While the larger 460cc+ heads may appear to be easier to square up to the ball due to greater surface area – again, you lose control and without control, you are not hitting the center of anything.

Another tip about using a driver is that this is not a club that you have to swing hard.  If swung correctly (rather than hard), the driver is designed to hit the ball far.  The harder and faster you swing, the more accuracy you will lose.  Always remember to follow-through with the driver or else your ball will go to another planet.

While golf club are an essential to your golf game, it is probably wisest to use a 3-wood off the tee if you are not very good with your driver.  While it’s the king of the bag, so to speak, it is the most intimidating club, and the one which will humble you most.  Practice the most with you driver at the driving range (appropriately named) and prevent yourself from using it during a real game until you’ve mastered it.  If you heed this advice, you will probably find that your score improves starting with your next game.  Ultimately, while using each club well is an eventual goal, scoring well and winning the game is more important.
